Long Island is a large island off the coast of the state of New York, which houses the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn as well as the less densely populated and more affluent counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Because many of the residents of Suffolk and Nassau counties are commuters to the city, the Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in the world, operating 24 hours a day.

The population of Long Island is about 7,804,968, and a large section of that population resides in Brooklyn and Queens, which are the most populous of the five NYC boroughs. Long Island is connected to Manhattan and the greater New York City area through nine bridges and 13 tunnels that cross the East River.
